You should never have to sacrifice your hairstyle for the gym or studio! by Hadar Leibovitz

Do you have short layers or angles that may not fit into a ponytail?

Don’t fret! We’ve created a few layer friendly, versatile looks that survive even the sweatiest workouts.

  1. Switch it up!                                                                                                           Two strand rope twists emulate a braid but are much easier to achieve on yourself. They will save your blowout and hide shorter angles while you’re sweating it out in the gym. Best part? Take it out once the sweat has dried off your hair and you will have soft waves.
  2. Elevate the tried and true ponytail by doing a Mohawk braid down the middle. Braiding the hair in between the arches of your brows to the crown of your head hides those shorter pieces and adds some fun and personality to the pony.
  3. The most popular gym ‘do’? A messy bun! The secret ingredient here is to add a mask to the ends of the hair before your workout. As your scalp generates heat from perspiring, the hair cuticle opens up and really absorbs all those great conditioning properties. Avoid getting the mask on the roots so you can keep the messy texture and not look greasy!

So next time you have to ask yourself “Is this gym/studio appropriate?” keep an open mind along with these hairstyles in your back pocket.

Hair Myths…..How True Are They?

Lighten-your-hair-with-lemon We asked AKS Colorist and health and wellness guru about a few hair myths. We wanted to know, are they true?

Q. Will squeezing lemon in hair actually give you highlights?

A. If you want chemical free all-natural highlights go head and squeeze some fresh lemon directly in your hair for some sun-kissed highlights. It’s also a great way to add some shine and strength as lemon has high content of vitamin C and some minerals.

Q. Will chlorine turn hair green?

A. It’s the presence of copper in the pool that causes hair to turn green, not chlorine. I usually advise my clients to rinse there hair with cold water before dunking their locks into chlorinated water. It helps to coat and seal the cuticle layer of the hair, making it hard for any chemical that’s in the pool to penetrate the hair. Always rinse and condition your hair after swimming to protect your haircolor.

Q. Should you be changing up your shampoo and conditioner every couple months?

A. Changing your shampoo and conditioner with seasons is required to have healthy hair as our hair is constantly changing with climate change. Switch it up to have healthy, bouncy, vibrant and smoother looking hair.

Haircolor has dried out your hair?

Okay, you got it dyed and cut and ever since then you can’t ever brush it because it gets tangled. You can’t do anything with it and hate wearing it up everyday…….sound familiar? After hair color, the cuticle layer (outer layer) of your hair remains in an opened or widened position for some time. This leaves hair dull and easily tangled – the exact opposite reason you went to get your hair done to begin with! No fret. It is important that for the 2 weeks following a hair color service you treat your hair to moisturizing treatments and use heat protectants.  We love the Nigelle treatment service. It is keratin based, resulting in stronger, smoother, shinier hair that is easier to style. You receive the service in the salon for a minimal cost and then take home 4 treatment vials so that you can continue to treat your hair 1x/week for the next 4 weeks! Once your out of the shower and before adding styling products, make sure you fill in the sponge that is your hair with a heat protectant. We love PhytoKeratine Thermal Spray.  Add the AKS Serum and your in stress free hair styling heaven!
